Winchester's Beloved Hat Fair Is Taking a Year Off — But It's Coming Back Bigger Than Ever

Hat Fair is skipping summer 2026 entirely, but the arts charity behind it says this 'Pause with a Purpose' could transform the festival forever.

Winchester's much-loved Hat Fair won't be gracing the city's streets this summer — but before you despair, the arts charity behind it says the pause is very much intentional, and what's coming next could be the festival's most exciting chapter yet. Play to the Crowd, the charity that produces Hat Fair and runs Theatre Royal Winchester, has confirmed the outdoor arts festival will return on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 July 2027, after a deliberate one-year break in 2026.

A 'Pause With a Purpose'

This isn't a cancellation — it's a rethink. Play to the Crowd has been using 2026 to step back and ask some big questions about what Hat Fair is actually for, who it serves, and how it can survive long into the future.

The charity describes the break as a 'Pause with a Purpose', using the time to review how the festival can best serve local communities, artists and audiences as part of its broader charitable mission. It's the kind of honest self-reflection that rarely happens when organisations are stuck in the annual grind of just keeping the show on the road.

The result? A sharper, more ambitious vision for what Hat Fair can become.

Four Big Ambitions for the Future

Play to the Crowd has set out four clear goals for the festival going forward. They want Hat Fair to become an international example of how outdoor arts can shape community identity and placemaking. They want it recognised nationally as a testing ground for new artistic work. They're building a professional development programme for emerging outdoor arts makers. And they want to champion creative access for local and national talent alike.

Those are bold ambitions — but the charity says the pause has given them the space to mean them. Going forward, Hat Fair will act as a focal point where year-round creative projects and community partnerships come together, rather than existing as a standalone summer event.

Scouting the Globe for the Best Acts

Meanwhile, CEO and Artistic Director Deryck Newland and Festivals and Projects Producer Rose Slade aren't sitting still. The pair are currently visiting festivals across the UK and internationally, hunting down the most exciting outdoor arts performances to bring to Winchester in 2027.

So while Winchester's streets may be quieter this July, the groundwork being laid right now could mean 2027's festival is the strongest Hat Fair has ever staged. That's a promise worth holding them to.

Your Voice Matters

Play to the Crowd is also reaching out to the public — and they genuinely want to hear from local residents about what makes Hat Fair special to them. Community focus groups and surveys are being launched in the coming months to help shape the festival's future direction.

Anyone who wants to get involved, join a focus group or take part in a survey can contact kirstie@playtothecrowd.co.uk. This is a rare chance to have a real say in how a beloved local institution rebuilds itself.

Can't Wait Until 2027? There's a Cabaret

For those already feeling the Hat Fair-shaped hole in their summer, there is a consolation on the horizon. The Hat Fair Cabaret returns to Theatre Royal Winchester on Friday 15 January 2027, curated and headlined by Hat Fair favourites Street Comedy.

The evening promises to celebrate the spirit of Hat Fair while raising funds towards the festival's return. Tickets are available at theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk.

What Happens Next

Play to the Crowd will continue conversations with funders, partners and stakeholders over the coming months as it works to secure long-term investment for the festival. Community surveys and focus groups will launch soon, and the Hat Fair Cabaret in January 2027 will serve as the first real public moment of the festival's comeback story. Hat Fair itself returns to Winchester's streets on 3 and 4 July 2027.
