Walking and Wheeling Festival Returns This Summer With Over 40 Routes
Eastleigh's popular Walking and Wheeling Festival launches on August 17, featuring more than 40 free routes across the borough throughout August and September.
The Walking and Wheeling Festival is returning to Eastleigh this summer, promising residents the chance to explore their local area while staying active. Running from Thursday 17 August through 13 September, the festival builds on the success of last year's inaugural event, with even more routes and activities on offer.
Forty Routes to Explore
With over 40 free routes now available, the festival caters to everyone, regardless of their mobility or fitness level. These routes cover a range of themes, lengths and locations, with accessibility in mind for foot, wheelchair and mobility aid users. Whether you prefer guided walks led by experienced route leaders or the freedom of self-guided exploration, there's something for every resident to enjoy.
The routes showcase the beauty of Eastleigh through creative and engaging themes. Route leaders bring history, art, nature and photography to life, transforming a simple walk into an educational and entertaining experience. This approach helps residents discover not just new places, but also the joys of moving under their own steam.
Special Festival Events
The festival will be bookended by special events for families. 'Spitfire Street', created by The Point Theatre team, will launch the festival at Lakeside Country Park on opening day and return to close the event at Boorley Park on 13 September. These community celebrations promise to add extra excitement to the beginning and end of the festival period.
Getting Involved
Most routes require advance booking due to limited places, so residents are encouraged to book early to secure their spot. This planning ensures route leaders can provide the best possible experience for participants while managing group sizes effectively.
Funding and Future Plans
The project receives funding from Hampshire County Council and forms part of a larger initiative covering walking and cycling activities through to 2028. The Walking and Wheeling Festival sits within the broader WalkTogether and CycleTogether Eastleigh programmes, demonstrating the council's commitment to promoting active travel and community wellbeing.
Cllr Tonia Craig, Eastleigh Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Health, expressed enthusiasm for the expanded programme: the festival is described as bigger and better than ever, with over ten additional routes and the second feature event at an alternative location providing fresh opportunities for exploration.
An Inclusive Programme
What makes this festival particularly special is its inclusive nature. By offering routes suitable for all abilities and interests, Eastleigh Borough Council ensures that everyone in the community can participate. Whether you're a seasoned walker, someone using a wheelchair, or simply looking to explore your neighbourhood with expert guidance, the festival welcomes you.
Residents are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to experience new and beautiful locations across the borough with knowledgeable route leaders and dedicated local volunteers.
